Video review transcript: The Lady From the Sea at the Bridge Theatre is an Ibsen play that has a modern spin on it.
Nothing against modern adaptations at all. I’ve seen some brilliant modern adaptation, adaptations of classic plays, but I don’t think this works.
Really feels like there’s a lot of elements that have been added that just don’t really enhance the central story or support the central story.
And I was actually thinking, there’s quite a few characters in there you could just get rid of, and it wouldn’t actually impact the central story at all.
I was having a conversation on Instagram with with Vickster, and she said it’s like two plays that have been pushed together. And I agree with I agree with that.
And then there’s the use of water in the second act. Sorry if this is a spoiler for anyone, but they have a rain scene that goes on and on and on, and you get actors, just basically pairs of actors just come and stand in the pouring rain and have a conversation.
It’s so distracting, for a start, and just so pointless. It was just weird.
There’s also a really weird sex scene going on, rolling around in shallow water. There’s a lot of stuff in it that just feels unnecessary.
I mean, it’s early stages, it hasn’t had its official opening yet. Maybe they’re going to cut and trim back some stuff, I don’t know, but I can only talk about what I actually saw on the night.
I didn’t feel the relationships between any of the characters. Well, I just didn’t believe the relationships. I didn’t believe why certain people were with certain people.
I didn’t enjoy it, I think you can tell.
