Sea_Wall_1024x576Commissioned by Josie Rourke in 2008 when she was artistic director at the Bush, Simon Stephens was given three weeks to write a 30 min play, for one actor.

The endeavour coincided with an email from Andrew Scott and so he became the physical embodiment of Alex, the Sea Wall's character. It was essentially written for him.

This revival at the National Theatre's intimate temporary space, The Shed, is playing for just one week at 10 pm and it is a shame more people won't get to see it because it is an exceptional piece.

It is best not to know too much about the story just that Scott plays Alex, who is a husband, father and son-in-law.

Stephen's script delivers something that is both cleverly structured – artful is how PolyG described it – and yet so natural. In Andrew Scott's hands it has tremendous warmth and humour and yet there is something highly charged, something quite raw.

He develops a close relationship with the audience as if he's telling his story to each person individually. He draws you in, freed from the distraction of sets, fancy costumes and lighting he has you hanging on his every word which can be quite unsettling at times. And, such is his performance that what goes unsaid hangs like an oppressive weight.


There is one of those very special and rare theatre moments when a pause is so pregnant it felt like the audience collectively held its breath. The tension was palpable, as was the whirring of a 100 or so minds as they grappled with filling in the blanks.

Sea Wall is at once and the same such an extraordinary and ordinary story. The ordinary becoming extraordinarily pertinent with the irony of hindsight. It is about man's struggle with the question of god, about what we don't know and what we did know. It's about loss.

I left the theatre feeling shattered having seen a man completely broken in just 30 minutes; no, not seen, felt a man being broken. That is the power of this piece as performed by Andrew Scott.

    Hi I am really looking forward to seeing this week. I read about it and could really imagine Andrew Scott doing this kind of performance. He has such an amazing intensity. It’s a busy theatre week for me as I am also taking my boys to see “Romeo and Juliet” at The Shed and then I’m off to see “The Cripple of Inishmaan” at the weekend. Perfect.
    Did you catch the news this morning that Mr W will be in ‘Mojo’ at the Harold Pinter Theatre in October? This was obviously “the play at the end of the year ” he was referring to in an interview I read a while back.
    Any hints on getting the best tickets? I hope to avoid the stampede of Harry Pottter fans along the way!

    Let me know what you think. I’ve just watched the version he did as a piece to camera and it doesn’t lose any of its potency.
    And yes I did catch the Mojo news, actually heard last night but the tickets hadn’t gone on sale. Have snapped up a couple already – still plenty of good seats although the first few performances tend to sell the fastest. Probably best to get in their sooner rather than later before word spreads although they haven’t announced the length of the run yet and are only booking up to Nov 16.

    Have a few thoughts about the play and his character but I’m going to write a post about it over the weekend.

    Hi just thought I’d let you know that I saw ‘Sea Wall’ last night and adored it. It felt so natural and unforced, not like a performance at all, more like the intimate confession of a friend. I must check out the film version too, just to hear it all again and maybe to not feel so overwhelmed by the intensity of the occasion.
    Thanks for the ‘Mojo’ ticket link – purchase completed, tickets arrived today. I read some reviews of the original production and it sounds like Tom Hollander’s ‘Baby’ was magnificent. It will be very interesting to see how Mr W handles it. It’s certainly a very exciting departure from his recent work. I am looking forward to it very much.

    Glad too that you got the Mojo ticket. The more I think about it the more excited I am – Mr W will get to satisfy his urge to sing too ;0)
